Beat The Winter Blues

By Maureen Schuster

Are you counting the days until spring? The months between the end of the winter holidays and the arrival of the first dogwood blossom can be difficult. The sun sets earlier, the temperature drops and so does your mood. Don't give into the common effects of the winter doldrums like fatigue, weight gain and depressed moods. Use these tips to beat the winter blues.

1. Exercise regularly. Studies show that exercising releases endorphins which have an analgesic effect on the brain which result in feelings of euphoria and help fend off symptoms of depression. Shopping malls make it easy to exercise safely in the winter without braving the elements. They open early in the morning so walkers can exercise in a climate-controlled setting before the stores even open. If the mall is not for you, contact your local senior center and area churches for their fitness schedules. Many provide low cost or free senior aerobic classes and walking tracks. Grab a friend and get moving.

2. Sun exposure. Don't wait until the spring to feel the sunlight on your face. Feeling lethargic is common in cold weather months when there is less sun. We all need small bursts of sunlight to feel energized. Bundle up and head outside for a few minutes each day while the sun is shining. Even unrolling your car window while driving provides the health benefits of natural light.

3. Attitude is everything. Have a positive mental attitude. Remind yourself this season is temporary, and it will not last forever. Eventually, it will be replaced by sun-drenched spring afternoons. If you find yourself dwelling on negatives thoughts, visualize enjoyable winter activities. Picture positive memories associated with winter like sipping hot chocolate by a warm fire.

4. Change your routine. If you feel like pulling the covers over your head and staying in bed, force yourself to do something different and beat boredom. Eat at a restaurant you've always wanted to try, head to a museum, or invite a few friends over to play cards. Changing your environment can also spice up your life.

5. Eat Healthy. It's easy to fall into the winter weight gain trap. During the colder months, ripe produce is hard to find, and it's expensive. Don't be tempted by pre-packaged and fat-laden foods. A better alternative is to stock up on affordable and vitamin-enriched frozen vegetables. Eating hearty soups loaded with a variety of vegetables makes for a healthy and satisfying meal.

6. Keep germs at bay. Getting a cold or flu makes winter feel even longer. Keep your hands clean by washing them with warm soapy water. Ensure a germ-free living area by routinely wiping down phones, door knobs and other surfaces with sanitizing wipes.
